Fitted cap size chart

Fitted sizes are written as a whole number plus an eighth: 7, 7 ⅛, 7 ¼ and so on. Each step is ⅛ of an inch of diameter, which works out to about 1 cm of circumference. The chart matches every fraction to a head measurement.

Which fitted size should I buy?

If your measurement lands exactly on a size, buy that size. If it lands between two, buy the larger one. Fitted caps are usually cotton or wool and both shrink slightly with sweat and washing. A cap that is ⅛ big can be made snug with a strip of sizing tape; a cap that is ⅛ small will pinch across the forehead.

Low-profile and A-frame fitted caps use the same sizing as regular fitted caps. Some brands note that low-profile styles run a touch big because the crown is shallower, so if you are between sizes on a low-profile cap, consider the smaller one.

Fit tips

  • Buy the larger size when between sizes. Wool and cotton shrink.
  • A fitted cap should sit level, about a finger’s width above your eyebrows, with no pressure points.
  • To shrink a slightly big cap, wear it in a warm shower and let it air-dry on your head.

How to measure your head

  1. 1 Use a soft tape measure, or a string and a ruler.
  2. 2 Wrap it around your head where the hat will sit: about 1 cm (⅜ in) above your ears and across the middle of your forehead.
  3. 3 Keep the tape level and snug, not tight. Do not pull it in.
  4. 4 Read the number where the tape overlaps. Measure two or three times and use the largest value.

What is the most common fitted hat size?

7 ⅛ and 7 ¼ (about 57 to 58 cm) are the most common men’s sizes, and 7 (56 cm) is the most common women’s size. About 7 in 10 men wear 7 to 7 ⅜.

What fitted hat size is a Medium?

Medium is usually 7 to 7 ⅛ (56 to 57 cm); 7 ¼ is already a Large. Check the brand’s chart, because stretch-fit caps use combined sizes such as S/M instead.

Do fitted hats stretch?

A little, mostly in the sweatband. Expect up to ⅛ of a size after a few weeks of wear. They do not stretch a full size, so buy the size that fits.

What size fitted hat for a 22 inch head?

22 inches is a fitted size 7. 22 ¾ inches is a 7 ¼ and 23 ½ inches is a 7 ½.
